There's a new design out, that was a finalist in MIT's 2006 business plan competition ( http://www.mit50k.net/news/2006finalists.php ).  You can see it here http://www.terrafugia.com/ I spoke with one of the guys on the team - they are getting funding offers from venture capital firms.  They expect to deliver their first planes in 2009, at prices estimated at $148k.  They (and others) feel that they have come up with a design and business plan that will work, where others have failed.  (Only time will tell)
